What is the history and popularity of the app?

AreaVibes was founded in June of 2010. It has shown a generally steady growth in site traffic since then. The company is a small, privately held company, with its base in Toronto, Canada. The CEO, Jon Russo, has been involved with Internet startups since 1998.

What are the differences to other apps?

This app is unique in that it offers very detailed information about every part of a city. From the demographics to the cost of living, AreaVibes covers it all. The site is very easy to use and has an intuitive interface. Similar apps are overrun with advertising. While AreaVibes has some ads in the left side as well as some between topics on pages, it is not too intrusive.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The left hand side of the results page is all advertisements. This is slightly intrusive because the rest of the interface is very clear and concise with tabs, a map, and very easy to read statistics.

The overall score of a city also includes its state rank and US rank. For example, Boston, MA has a score of 76, state rank of 80 and US rank of 7,710. Several facts and figures are available at a glance with simple bar graphs, using color coding (red to green). Each fact can be explored further by clicking on it for details. An example could be cost of living. If a user clicked on that category for Boston, MA after seeing it was about 40% and in the yellow on the bar graph, a breakdown of the cost of living, goods and services, groceries, health care, transportation and utilities indices would be presented in comparison to the state and national averages. In this case, Boston was higher than both state and national. The page further breaks down the difference in percentages as well as the prices of gas, coffee, and pizza - three very common purchases that users can relate to.

Each category is similarly broken down: the crime index, education, employment, health and safety, housing statistics, transportation, weather, local businesses, and reviews.

Users are also offered the option of comparing two cities. The comparison provides score and category comparisons of both cities.

In addition, the city page includes an integrated Google map, general data, and photos of the city. There are also reviews and forum postings with questions about the city. Each city page also provides the highest ranking neighborhoods, and large nearby cities.

Via tabs at the top of the page, users may see detailed demographics in overview and graph form, reviews from visitors and natives of the city, a forum for users to ask questions about the city, a map indicating neighborhoods and whether they are good, average, or below average, local attractions including restaurants, bars, movie theaters, etc., and daily deals for local businesses that may be filtered by price or percent of discount.

The app is easy to use and has contains a lot of useful information.

How does the registration process work?

To register, a user must provide first and last name, gender, location, screen name, email address, and password. This is also the section to choose whether to receive email news and updates. This is checked by default, so if a user does not want to receive them, they must remember to uncheck this box.

The user is notified that an email with activation link will be sent. This process was not immediate, in fact the email had still not arrived after over 24 hours. The site was, however, usable without confirmation, without the ability to add reviews or earn points.

What does it cost to use the application?

This application is absolutely free to use.

Who would you recommend the application to?

This application would be ideal for travelers, people who are planning to relocate, and even students who need to research a city in detail. Everything you need to know about a US city is included in this app.

  • Free to use
  • Evaluation of each city based on multiple criteria.
  • Demographic information
  • Points programs for reviews, photos, and forum participation that translate into prizes.
  • Useful for planning a move or vacation.
